Classes started two weeks ago, which means that I’m already three weeks behind in my reading. Ok, that’s not even remotely accurate; true to form, I’m roughly a week ahead, but I FEEL like I’m weeks behind because of the sheer volume.
On tap for this quarter: “Visceral, Voluble, and Virtual: Feminqueer Corporealities” (yes, wordpress, those last two words are spelled correctly) on Tuesdays from 9-12, “Origins of the American Novel: Captivity and Courtship” on Wednesdays from 9-12, and “Film and Society: The Politics of Representation” on Fridays from 1-4. The course titles alone indicate a certain predilection for verbosity.
Coursework aside, my transition to life in LA is plugging along slowly but surely, just like the traffic on Wilshire. A few of the choice ways I’ve spent my time over the past week:
- Twenty minutes listening to the wrath of a very angry man, aka the raving rabbi at Hillel’s high holiday services. Consequent decision: check out the Reform service for Kol Nidre this Wednesday.
- Ten minutes of an incense-infused “Sita Ram” chanting circle at the beginning of Saturday’s yoga class. Consequent decision: try the earlier, longer yoga class next Saturday.
- Two hours making phone calls for MoveOn.org at an Obama calling party in Beverly Hills (on Rodeo Drive, no less). Consequent decision: be nicer to telemarketers.
- Five minutes watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhDRVKDcXQo. Best-spent time of the past seven days.
