According to recent history, I start every post with a comment about how long it’s been since I last updated this supposedly-current medium. It also appears that I consistently remember this website once per quarter (proof yet again that the academic calendar governs my life with its benevolent regulating force. Ah, the ivory tower). And so, because history tends to repeat itself and because I am indeed a creature of good habits, here I am: ensconced in my second-favorite corner at my almost-local Peet’s, finally crafting a new “hello” to send out onto the information superhighway.
*Here I should note that I’ve been told a few of the article links are out of date. I’ll do my best to update them over the next few weeks, but the to-do list is still rather unwieldy, so if there’s a piece you somehow haven’t already read, let me know and I’ll send you one of those antiquated Word documents.
Onwards to the list… In honor of summer, sunshine, and so forth, today’s Top Five is brought to you by the letter S.
Summer plan #1: Learn to “read” Spanish well enough to pass the translation exam in the fall. Silver lining: I can read French.
Summer plan #2: Start reading a few of the 90 books for my Part Is. Yes, that’s 9-0. As in 10 times 9. Silver lining: I’ve read at least 5 of the books on my lists. Every last one counts, even if Infinite Jest is in the un-read pile.
Summer plan #3: Sleep. Okay, I do that anyway. Maybe “Sit (for more than 15 minutes every morning)” is a better, more rare endeavor to undertake. Silver lining: They’re both free. Just like the beach and Sunset Canyon, UCLA’s pool and slightly obscene tanning mecca.
Summer plan #2: See all of the cool, random, fun things this city has to offer. So much to do, so little time. Silver lining: I’ve got a few years ahead of me.
Summer plan #1: Smile. Because, really, it’s summer and I live 15 minutes from the beach, 5 minutes from a pool, and mere seconds away from some overflowing bookshelves.
